Week 4 :: of black and red and tough all over

Ah, the best laid plans of mice and men!

This was to be Floral Week and I had all the inspiration pics and outfits all planned out and lined up in order.  I even took into consideration the warming weather trend, the lessons I was planning on teaching (whether or not they required me to move around or no) and the very important parent meeting on Tuesday.  I had thought of every contingency.

Except, apparently, for the most important one.

If you’re female, I think you know what I’m talking about.  I don’t want to mention it and risk sounding gauche so I’ll just say that it’s the game-changing thing that happens every month and prevents the wearing of whites and pastels.  Get it now?

So, yeah.  No Floral Week this week.  I had to mad scramble to come up with something else, and what with the ridiculous Daylight Savings Time change, I was loathe to put forth too much effort.  Therefore, my friends, I present to you…

:: Maxi Skirt Week ::

I feel that I’ve come full circle with this theme, actually, since my very first batch of pins on Pinterest were for maxis.  It was the tail end of last season (last school year) and maxi skirts and dresses were making a resurgence and I’d said to hell with being short and all the rules that pertains!  I’m going maxi!  So I bought a plethora of maxis, wore a few to the ground, then promptly forgot all about them this season when I hit my color/print/floral phase hard.

I think it’s high time I pulled them out of retirement.

Today’s outfit came perilously close to being pumpkin-esque and Halloween-y.  I didn’t have an oxblood skirt like the inspiration pic and I thought a deep tomato red would do the trick.  But when paired with black, my tomato red morphed into orange.  Blargh.  I was about to scrap the whole outfit and try another when it hit me – I didn’t have to do all black on top.  So out came my prints and surprisingly, with not very much effort, my ensemble fell into place.

The blouse is actually a peplum but when I wore it over the fullness of the skirt, it ended up feeling frumpy.  Tucked in then implementing a patent leather belt to emphasize the tuck, it looks a lot more polished.  I toyed with the idea of a necklace but the print of the top serves as accessory enough.  I did add a pop of color with the drop earrings at the last minute just because.

I like the juxtaposition of hard and soft, especially with something as flowy as this skirt.  The outfit was already toughened up with the moto jacket a là the inspiration pic, but I wanted to kick it up a notch so I opted for moto boots as well.

Would you have used a different shoe with this outfit?  Or do you appreciate the quirkiness of a moto boot paired with a maxi?
