Week 17 :: of VIPs, loose interpretations, and being bohemian

This is so nerve-wracking!

I don’t think I’m going to be able to sustain the energy or the wherewithal for this week.  9 o’clock pm is just way too late for me to be style blogging.

Which is a complete 180 from where I was a mere year ago, when I would stay up until the wee hours of dawn reading or knitting or catching up on my shows only to turn around and get up for work at five in the morning.

The mind is willing but the body is definitely weakening.  In that respect, then, being 40-something sucks.

It doesn’t help that today’s Style Up look is not entirely appropriate for work.

Contrast a fun, artsy tank with classic nude heels and black pants. A top knot lends a touch more elegance.

Style Up Tuesday

I agree with the other comments about a tight pants + bare shoulders being a no-no for work.  Now I know I’ve mentioned before how casual my co-workers tend to be, but today we are hosting yet another round of VIPs and we all know that bare arms make my happiness factor plummet anyway.  I needed a power outfit today.

Stat.

Therefore, I chose to interpret the “fun, artsy” part rather than the “tank” part of the description and nothing screams artsy more for me than bohemian.  And nothing screams bohemian more for me than kimono tops.  And whaddayaknow?  I happen to own the perfect one!

Style Up Tuesday

I was actually going to go really loose in my recreation today and opt for white bottoms – Hey, at least it’s the opposite of black, right? – because I’d already worn what I thought was my one lone pair of dark skinnies for yesterday’s look.  (I did try this ensemble with a black bootcut trouser but the proportions were way off, sending me into stumpy, Oompa Loompa land.)

Style Up Tuesday

Thank goodness for Lauren Conrad.  Remember these pants?  (Yowzas! I sucked at making collages back then!)  Anyhow, I loved the white ones so much that I’d gone ahead and purchased a black pair which I promptly lost in the depths of my closet until today.  I am ashamed to say they still had the tags on them, four months later.  But all’s well that ends well because now I can get closer to the inspiration pic than I thought I would.

Style Up Tuesday

Nude heels and a topknot would’ve completed the look, but my hair is now too long and thick for a  topknot so ponytail it is.  At least I got the nude heel part down.

So, what do you say, my friends?  Successful pseudo-dupe?  Or should I have thrown caution to the wind and donned the informal tank instead for a true duped outfit?

    • Lol! My thoughts exactly. But the same reasons that prohibit me the topknot also explain my low pony. I just have so much hair and it’s so thick and heavy that it invariably finds its way low no matter how high I start it. :/

    • And to think it was on its way to being one of those “I bought it and now I don’t know how to style it and therefore must donate it” type of tops! One more point for Team Variety, I say. ;p

  1. Well, you should wear what you feel confident in, so even though I think you look fine in a tank, no tank for today. I know that for work I always at least try to do sleeveless…not too much of a difference, but enough.

    • I think Angie over at You Look Fab said it best: “Sleeveless garments are often cut too wide baring too much underarm” which is the case for most tanks. So I get what you’re saying about sleeveless tops being okay for the workplace; they usually have a higher cut and therefore more visual coverage. Still not enough for me and my arm wattle hang-ups, though. ;D

  2. I think you definitely captured the spirit of the inspiration photo, and obviously, you have to make it work for your real life. That top is beautiful!

Also, last week’s Blue Willow fabric post really got me! Not only did I get a little flue & white floral tank, but today I bought this dress:

Blue Willow like fabric, great fit, and it’s the perfect length (unheard of for me w/ maxi dresses)!

    • Thanks muchly! Who knew this top would elicit such positive comments?

Argh! Curses, temptress! That dress is fab! How did I miss it!? Now I must just covet from afar because I really MUST stick to my monthly budgets, especially with summer almost upon us. Send me pics of you in it, yeah?

      • Yes, of course! I’m planning to wear it for my husband’s birthday party on Saturday, do I’ll be sure to get some good pics then.

  3. I think that might’ve been before the collage app I showed you?

Anyway. Because of the presence of the VIPs, the kimono was a good choice. The tank would’ve been a little too informal, even for the last full week of school.

Push through Style Up week! It’s the last full week of school, after all. Go out with a bang, Edwards 🙂

    • Definitely before the lovely app. You will forever be a godsend, SarahTaylor! Now if you can figure out a way to play Pet City (FB app) on the iPad for Aly, that’d be awesome sauce!

I shall endeavor to push through Style Up week. It’s actually not been so bad; just the waiting is killing me coz you know my over-achieving self wants to write copy days in advance.

      • Googled, and it involves some serious jailbreaking. I think it’s the Flash – or w/e plugins are necessary – that aren’t native to the iPad. It can be done, but it takes work. There are alternative apps, though? I know that’s probs not what Aly is looking for, though.

Just go with the flow~~~ And let the overachiever in you rest up for Yale!

Tell me all about it! I'm listening...
