5 Things :: what I snack on

Let’s face it: I am not the healthiest of people.

One of the things that all health gurus talk about not doing if you want to lose weight is my kryptonite. I’m talking about late-night snacking, folks.

Yes, I know I’m not supposed to eat anything after [insert evening hour du jour here]. Yes, I know that staying up late promotes mindless grazing. But you know what? I’m a night owl. And my staying up late is my time. No work. No husband. No kids. My time.

And if I choose to grab some good eats to make that tv show/book/website a more interactive and sensory experience, then gosh darn it! I’m only human. Don’t judge me.

Here, then, are my top five snack faves that I try to keep stocked in the pantry at all times.

  1. Froot Loops – possibly the best sugary cereal on the market. They’re round. They’re colorful. They in no way resemble fruit in taste or texture or ingredients. I love them.
  2. Cheese balls – preferably the ones from Target that come in the big tub. Because then you can justify finishing the entire tub in one sitting by telling your family that we needed another container for flour.
  3. Ice cream – any flavor, any time. This just goes without saying, doesn’t it?
  4. Mexican candy – I talk all about it here.
  5. String cheese – because a gal can’t live on junk alone. Whenever I’m feeling snacky and virtuous at the same time, this is what I grab. Coupled with huge swigs of water, a stick of cheese really does satisfy the growly stomach. Trust.

Week in review – borrowed from the boys indeed!

My wonderful boyfriend is convinced Classic Lays Potato Chips cure cancer. He kept the house stocked when I was in that war, and has not ceased now that I’ve crossed the rubicon. That lovely yellow bag appears whenever he finds a sale and I pounce upon it and drag it to my lair. And munch. Why is it the couch and a book always go better with a snack?

  2. I hear you on the Fruit Loops – I was snacking on some while I made dinner.

    My favorite snacks right now:
Original Chex Mix – oddly, especially good with grape soda. Is that weird?
Frozen blueberries – I LOVE blueberries! For me, they make a great (guilt free) substitute for ice cream.

Okay, you’re gonna have to school me on the merits and wonders of the blueberry. (I’ve only ever had them either in yogurt or muffins, both of which are sweetened by other things.) Because honestly, blueberries are pretty tasteless to me. I know they’re great for antioxidants and all that but eating them fresh has always been underwhelming.

      • When I buy fresh, they are locally grown – maybe east coast blueberries taste different?
Fresh blueberries can be tricky – not quite ripe they can be tart, slightly too ripe they can be bland. There’s a short period where they are a perfect balance of tart & sweet. I like frozen because, generally, they have that balance.

  3. I love ice cream– but rarely do I indulge! I am fine as long as I don’t keep it in my home, but the moment it comes through the door it is gone. Seriously. As in the entire container. Regardless of the size! And that is why I haven’t had the pleasure of it crossing my lips in quite some time… ALAS!

  4. My most recent kryptonite? Velveeta queso dip – with ground cooked sausage and sauteed onions. Good hot and cold. Love it so much that I made it twice in the same week. Good thing I can’t ever locate the Velveeta in the supermarket …

It’s on the top shelf, right next to the boxed mac ‘n cheese. 😀

That conglomeration of fat and cholesterol sounds to die for! After three weeks of “cleansing” (I’m drinking my lunch, thank you very much), just the very thought of that queso dip has me slavering. Good thing I’m already in my jammies or I’d head out to Stater Bros. for the fixin’s and make me some.

Tell me all about it! I'm listening...
