OOTD :: of fancy handkerchief hems and saving the best for last

Okay, I can deny it no longer.

I guess I am a rocker chick at heart after all.

I admit this because, according to Tim Gunn and my new friend, Alex @ Undergraduate Style, “only wear something if you love it and it loves you back”. And man, I do so love sporting the tough-yet-femme vibe! Patti @ Not Dead Yet and I are polar opposites on this. She’d posted Monday about her feeling slightly ill at ease in “tough-girl” guise, and even though I beg to differ on that (isn’t she just scrumptious?!) I do empathize with the feeling of malaise when I dress out of my comfort zone.

All this week, in order to fulfill Anne’s theme, I’ve been trying things that either go against my style grain or go against my comfort level. I did appreciate embracing disquiet in the spirit of experimentation, but now I’m just relieved to be doing this theme my way. And my way is taking my last 20s trend – the handkerchief hem – and turning it on its ear.

Skinny jeans? Check. Platform rompin-stompin booties? Check. Dark, dark lips and accompanying haughty pout? Check. All these contemporary elements help transform the statement 20s top from upscale evening wear to something saucy and irreverent while retaining a soupcon of “fancy” that is required in order for me to link up with Dolly.

Bon Vendredi, minna! Stay tuned for a special surprise mañana! (Didn’t know I was a polyglot, didja?)

OOTD :: of Art Deco design and sucking it all in

Today, we showcase art deco design.

This, in my opinion, is the epitome of the 20s and what I am most drawn to. The severity of the crisp geometry juxtaposed with the fluidity of the abstract swirls sings to the Gemini in me. I do so appreciate when combining two disparate things results in a comprehensive and aesthetic whole.

Whew. Now that that rigmarole is out of the way, let’s talk clothes. I’m really digging all the details of the top (which is the statement piece of this outfit, in case that wasn’t already apparent). The beading is exquisite and meticulous. The neckline is both modest and intriguing. The sleeves are very reminiscent of traditional Filipino dress. The scalloped hem adds an extra zing to an already-zingy piece. Oh, and did I mention the lining is 100% silk?

Of course, since this top was designed for evening wear, I knew I had to scale down the drama for it to be work appropriate. Cue the fresh mint blazer and the flippy skater skirt. Both work together to minimize the glitz and glamor of the top, the former because of its office/professional roots and the latter because of its casual jersey fabric. A pair of modest peeptoe heels completes the look.

To be honest, this may be my least favorite of the bunch this week, if only because I am going to be sucking in all day in this ensemble. Silk may be luxurious and rich, but it’s got no give. Add about a pound of beading and I feel like I’m stuck in a corset. Ah, at least I’m theme compliant, yeah?

EDIT: Phooey to you, SoCal weather! We’re having a storm! Sure, it’s a SoCal storm which means droplets from the sky and temps in the low 60s, but it’s cold and wet nonetheless. I can take one or the other in the original ensemble, but the one-two punch of cold and wet trumps it.

Below, then, is my attempt to winterize my outfit. Out with the ineffective blazer; in with the cuddly cardi. Throw on a pair of opaque leggings and provide some toe and leg coverage with a boot. If it had been five degrees colder, I would’ve added a scarf. Thank goodness I didn’t have to go that far; I really love the necklace with this look. And of course, to stave off the annoying raindrops from my glasses, finally a cloche!

I don’t know how successful the resulting ensemble is – and please pardon the bad indoor lighting – but at least now I can participate in Caitlin’s linkup.

OOTD :: of sequins and cheating just a little bit

Today, we feature sequins as the Roaring 20s trend.

What? What’s that, you say? I’m not wearing any sequins? Oh, alright. In point of fact, I’m wearing beads. Loads and loads of beads. I’m thinking, then, that the sheer plethora of beads ought to be the equivalent to sequins, yeah? I mean, they’re both sparkly and shiny and little.

No? Not convinced? Well, what if I pointed out that the swirly design on the tank top is reminiscent of Art Deco, which of course is very 20s? And what about that scalloped edge?

Still nothing? Hey, that necklace ought to count for something, right? And check out that little flapper pose I did just there. I’m like one jazz saxophonist away from the Charleston.

Man, this is a tough crowd! Okay, how about we just agree to disagree and just revel in the blue-ness of the outfit. At least I got TARDIS Tuesday right.

EDIT: Ah, SoCal weather! Thou art truly a fickle mistress!

Of course I’d wake up today to temps in the mid 70s. Not too shabby, my cousins to the immediate west would say. Are you kidding me? my East Coast brethren would exclaim. Regardless of your current temp and body adaptability thereof, I’m telling you I got cold and thus, the ensemble went through a last-minute revision.

Imagine my black lace skirt (twin to this one so not too difficult to swap) and my go-to black knee high boots (which, apparently, aren’t that go-to since I’ve worn them all of once since the inception of this blog). That’s what I truly wore today. Kinda de-emphasized the 20s theme even more, yeah?

My only consolation is that my students – who have taken it upon themselves to try to guess my weekly theme in exchange for homework passes – will be thrown off track by today’s outfit. Mwahahaha!
