OOTD :: of Class Color Day and interpreting fancy

You would think that this would be a no-brainer since the Junior class color is black and today is Fancy Friday.

Black is very fancy, right? I could’ve gone Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s or, at the opposite side of the spectrum, I could’ve sported my 007 Bond-ness and gone tuxedo formal. But Murphy’s Law dictates something needs to go awry and this time it’s our Shelter-in-place drill scheduled for today.

Different from fire or earthquake drills, this one has us preparing for the eventually of – heaven forbid! – a gunman on campus. It’s a pretty serious thing and I’m not belittling it in any way, but it sure does cramp my style for today’s link up. After all, I can’t very well lie flat on the ground (what the authorities tell us to do) in an LBD, can I?

The upshot? My outfit today had to be black and fancy. And shelter-in-place friendly.

Thesaurus.com helped me out in the end. I looked up synonyms for “fancy” and found a plethora of them that didn’t necessarily require formal wear. The one that caught my eye, however, was “ornamental”. And, Christmas connotations notwithstanding, I decided to go with it. Because nothing is more ornamental in my mind than an in-your-face animal print. Throw in the regulation statement necklace and a pair of spats and I think I’ve got a Fancy Friday winner on my hands.

I did dither over the skirt, though. Initially, I was all “I’m forty plus and propriety be damned!” But I guess ye old fashion taboo of wearing leggings as pants is so ingrained in me that I hastily donned the skater skirt to make me more presentable. After taking pictures of both iterations, however, I realized there was such minimal difference  – that Piko tunic is hella long, folks! – that it really didn’t matter. I guess it’ll depend on my mood whether I keep the skirt or not.
