OOTD :: of underestimating size and overestimating length

Based on today’s post title, can you guess which is which?

I’d like to think the nifty TARDIS blue offsets any fashion flub, but this time around, it got a little help from a pair of opaque tights and some visual sleight-of-hand.

To start: the polka dot top was a last-season Target purchase, abetted by KS#2’s waxing rhapsodic over it. At the time, I felt myself a good two sizes bigger than she, so I bought it in a large. And of course I bought it online. And of course it was too big, but it was so cute and they didn’t have my proper size anymore so I kept it, thinking I could always use it on my fat female days.

Then we’ve got the cardi: a recent purchase from Macy’s that was thrown in my cart to get free ship (I really only wanted the chartreuse one). I figured it was marked “petite” and so a large was perfectly justified. How utterly wrong I was. I feel like I’m swimming in my grandma’s sweater. But I’ve fallen in love with the color and I’d already ripped off the tag so I told myself it was too late to return it.

So why throw two oversized items together? Am I on crack? Do I deliberately want to look like a sack of potatoes? Well, let’s discuss the skirt, shall we? In my frantic hunt for TARDIS blue items several months ago, I ignored my instincts and purchased an item online from a company I wasn’t familiar with. I should’ve paid more attention to the obviously non-curvy adolescent model. Pulled over my child-bearing hips, this skirt ended up being two inches shorter than I’m truly comfortable with. But no returns or exchanges on final sale items.

Will I ever learn?

Anyhow, I was stuck with three disparate closet orphans. One option would’ve been to cull them immediately. But when one throws together ensembles late at night so one can create in peace and quiet, one sometimes hits the inspiration jackpot. I took the looseness of the tops and combined them with the shortness of the bottom, rejoiced in the practically perfect color matching of both, pulled on modesty-induced tights and crossed my fingers.

And wouldn’t you know – it worked! I think this must be my favorite outfit this week. Can you tell from my cheesy grin? And no, it’s not just because it’s blue. But that sure doesn’t hurt.
