OOTD :: of teenage espionage and launching my new linkup

So I recently rediscovered Goodreads and, as I was entering all the books I’ve read since the beginning of this school year, a disturbing interesting trend began to surface: I read a lot of young adult novels about teenage spies.

Seriously.

The entire Gallagher Girl series in one whack? The Ruby Red trilogy? The Mary Quinn mysteries? I’m gonna blame this all on a childhood misspent reading Nancy Drew books as quickly as they were published. Which was no small feat considering I was in the Philippines at the time and I had to wait for overseas shipping.

Anyhow, I’m currently in the throes of the Also Known As series, a fun, fluffy bite of brain candy that raises itself above the rest of the pack with its biting wit and fast-paced David Addison/Maddie Hayes-esque repartee, and that’s just the interplay among the parents and the protagonist. Wait till the teenage action/drama begins! Super fun series and if you’re in the mood for a light romp, then this comes highly recommended.

I think it’s quite fitting, then, that I get to launch T3 aka Thoughtful Third Thursday with an excerpt from the first book of this brilliant romp. In this snippet, 16-year-old Maggie Silver is told that she’s ready to tackle an assignment on her own after having just completed a joint mission with her spy parents:

I grabbed a uniform off the hanger and carried it back to my parents.

“Look at this!” I said, shaking it in front of them. “I’ve waited my whole life to go to high school and now I have to wear this?”

My mom spread cream cheese on her bagel. My dad sipped his coffee and nodded.

“Are you okay with me walking  the streets of downtown New York looking like Lolita?” I could feel my argument going nowhere, and for the first time in years, I felt nervous. If this didn’t work, I’d be starting high school the very next morning showing more leg than I had ever shown before. “This looks obscene. Someone should call Dateline.”

“You’ll probably need a sweater,” my mom replied. “It’s a little chilly out.”

Hey, any reason for me to sport some more plaid, right? And although the actual uniform calls for a white blouse and a blue plaid skirt, I’m playing my creative license card with my version because I’ve gotta do the 52 Pick-me-up pink thing. And Thrifted Thursday? Yeah, my skirt was all of $9. And that’s all I’m saying about that…

Now it’s your turn, folks! I’m always up for a good read and/or an inspired outfit. Get those links in. Stop by Selah’s place and link there too.

And welcome to Thoughtful Third Thursday!
