OOTD :: of fancy handkerchief hems and saving the best for last

Okay, I can deny it no longer.

I guess I am a rocker chick at heart after all.

I admit this because, according to Tim Gunn and my new friend, Alex @ Undergraduate Style, “only wear something if you love it and it loves you back”. And man, I do so love sporting the tough-yet-femme vibe! Patti @ Not Dead Yet and I are polar opposites on this. She’d posted Monday about her feeling slightly ill at ease in “tough-girl” guise, and even though I beg to differ on that (isn’t she just scrumptious?!) I do empathize with the feeling of malaise when I dress out of my comfort zone.

All this week, in order to fulfill Anne’s theme, I’ve been trying things that either go against my style grain or go against my comfort level. I did appreciate embracing disquiet in the spirit of experimentation, but now I’m just relieved to be doing this theme my way. And my way is taking my last 20s trend – the handkerchief hem – and turning it on its ear.

Skinny jeans? Check. Platform rompin-stompin booties? Check. Dark, dark lips and accompanying haughty pout? Check. All these contemporary elements help transform the statement 20s top from upscale evening wear to something saucy and irreverent while retaining a soupcon of “fancy” that is required in order for me to link up with Dolly.

Bon Vendredi, minna! Stay tuned for a special surprise mañana! (Didn’t know I was a polyglot, didja?)

OMG, I want to be you! Failing that, I want to hang out with you. At least I can do it virtually.

As much as I loved your pink week, you really are a bad ass rocker chick!

    I hope you’re staying dry, and un-muddy.

Awww, Val! You make me blush! Right down to my lower lip hairs. ;p

Un-muddy – yes. Dry – not even close, my friend! The rain was sheeting sideways on my way to my car after work! Thank goodness I had the presence of mind to grab my waterproof trench and cloche (the one I wore yesterday), both of which protected me somewhat from the elements.

  2. Ahhhh I love the embellished top! Thanks so much for the shoutout, friend! 😀

Ha ha I linked up your pic and link before I read your post (since it’s been taking me ages to post anything on WP lately) and I added an episode of a cartoon featuring a rock band called Dudes of Darkness in it because I was in the mood for something a bit rock ‘n’ roll and the cartoon is edgy plus it went with all of our outfits. Then I read this!

You are definitely looking more comfortable and in your comfort zone today, though you look wonderful everyday there’s always something about posts/pics when we’re in our stride and this is one of them. I love the sleekness of your outfit – the Black flows from head to toe and with all the gorgeous sequins/beading on the top. The top being another total ‘no way!’ moment for me – I had one like that in Yellow, Mum had one in Blue both from a brand called Lipsy years back, it just didn’t have sleeves! I also had a dress version in Green which I called my peacock dress which I wore to my friends peacock themed official wedding (official as in the legal UK version which then began a week long worth of wedding events and the Indian wedding). Seriously, looking at your blog is quite nostalgic lately – goes well with your vintage theme week I guess!

Also loving the necklace, the awesome hair surrounding the face and those legs straight into the shoes – said it once, I’ll say it again – sleek!

Okay, I’m feeling gutted about this, but what used to be a pair of comfy boots just killed my feet today. I MUST be getting old to not be able to stand these high heels anymore. So although I graciously and modestly acknowledge your compliment about the sleekness of this look, I fear this may be the last time we see these boots. Sigh. At least the top and jeans are winners, yeah?

So I guess I’m channeling my vintage Dolly? I am honored. 🙂

  4. You definitely saved the best for last! I love the top and the necklace for their 20s glam, but all the tough modern touches really make this outfit YOU. I also like to mix masculine with feminine, but I scew more Tomboy Chic than Rocker. I love your dark lipstick!

    • mtsedwards says:

Ha! I’ve gotten so many comments at school about that lipstick; even had a student ask me outright what it was and how she could acquire it.

Yep, yep – I love me some rock and roll. Funny, because my formative music years (read: high school) were spent swimming in Depeche Mode, Tears for Fears and The Cure. Guess my husband and all his classic rock sensibilities are finally rubbing off on me.

Tell me all about it! I'm listening...
