My mom makes friends everywhere she goes.
I kid you not – she has a ready smile for anyone and everyone and she always remembers a face. Whenever I visit her and inevitably we go out to eat, it doesn’t matter what restaurant I choose. It could be the mom & pop Filipino turo-turo down the street or the fancy-shmancy Thai fusion restaurant deep in the heart of Rowland Heights; wherever we go, my mom will know people.
She’ll know them by name, cajole them into giving us preferential treatment, and proceed to give me the skinny on that waiter’s travel plans or that chef’s children. If she doesn’t know anyone, odds are she’ll make friends immediately because that’s just the kind of person she is. I imagine she was like this as a teenager; it’s probably one of the reasons she partook in and won so many pageants. (I’ve seen the gorgeous photos of her to prove this but am not posting them to respect her privacy.)
Today, I’m highlighting my mother’s gregariousness by wearing one of my all-time fave dresses. You know it’s a definite favorite because I’ve worn it – or iterations of it – multiple times (here, here and here). And I think I love it so much because, next to rock and roll, I feel most confident in the 60s/mod style. And, if you can forgive one more car on this thought train, I think I feel most confident in the 60s/mod style because it reminds me of old photographs of my mom.
Bonus items: this coat was not only gifted to me by Mom (that was a coincidental add-on, I assure you!) its swing shape is also very reminiscent of the 60s. And that stick-straight hair, headband, Lucite necklace and matching wedges? Fuggedaboutit! I’m just a walking time warp and I’m loving it.
