OOTD :: of too-tight tops and cunning camouflage

It’s that time of the year again. Presentation time. Unlike traditional schools, ours don’t do finals week. Rather, we culminate our semesters with evening project presentations, and thanks to our lovely union, this means my work day begins at 1pm and ends at 8pm.

The good thing is that I get to sleep in. The bad thing is that I will be on my feet all night, circulating the MPR (multi-purpose room) and interrogating interviewing all 133 students regarding their semester-long project results. It’s the most taxing and hectic two hours of the year. There was no way I was gonna do all that in heels.

The creation of today’s outfit, then, began from the bottom up. I knew I wanted to wear flats and I knew, since I was in charge of assessing “Content” this time around (as opposed to last semester’s “Professionalism/Appearance”), that I could give myself a bit of leeway in terms of being a fashion role model. Having the luxury of being less formal in my attire allowed for greater flexibility in my ensemble.

Therefore, the only other self-imposed parameter was Anne’s 52 Pick-me-up theme which happened to be “Uptight/alright = wear that thing that’s a little too small.”

Oh, Anne! You’re killing me!

Sure, I didn’t have to be in full professional dress, but I couldn’t exactly be popping buttons or tugging at hemlines while I graded, right? Then I remembered: I had yet to do a Custo Barcelona week.

Remember my Mad Hunt for them several months ago? Since then, I have acquired over half a dozen Custos but because those darned Europeans are so teeny-tiny, even a size 4/L is snug on my supersize-me frame. And because I purchased them all via eBay, I was pretty much stuck with a modest fortune’s worth of too-small tops. I knew I had to wear them all at least once to make the investment worth it, but had been loathe to do so precisely because they were too small; I told myself I’d hang on to them and try to lose weight but, barring that occurrence, would then throw them back up for sale on eBay.

So I guess I have Anne to thank once again for forcing me out of my comfort zone, eh?

This week, then, I present to you Crazy for Custo and I do it for you, my friends. I shall endure staring at the lumps and bumps my overly-critical eyes spy in this week’s photos if only to prove that I can remix even the most challenging of pieces. And trust me, these are super challenging to style because wearing too-tight clothes goes against every fibre of my camouflaging instincts.

Good thing today’s Custo top has got that brilliant toile print that allows me to camouflage the most egregious of my body flaws. And forgive me if I utilize a completer piece that helps mitigate the look of lumps even more. I may be linking up with Patti for Visible Monday, but I don’t really want to be that visible.

P.S. I just made a new acquaintance with Jen @ Basic Training Corporate Style who very graciously emailed me and invited me to partake in her weekly linkups. She had me at “linkup” (you all know what a junkie I am!) but then she clinched the deal with her voice and style. I love a gal who can write! Check out her blog and join in the fun over there too!

  2. If this is too tight, then the camera is on your side, Maricel. Fitted. That’s what it is … bodycon and fitted. Really, it’s pretty on you. Lovely print, too. I see what you mean! The pink on pink outfit was gorgeous. Hope you wear it often!
Gotta go find out more about Custo. And pop over to read “Fashionably Employed.” One great blogger leads to another. It’s so cool how that works!

    • Blogging sure does put a whole new spin on “networking”, doesn’t it?

And yes, I think I like “fitted”. That’s a great adjective for it. 😀

  3. I don’t think this looks tight at all…you look so edgy! Glad you aren’t wearing a denim teacher vest for assessments!

    • Woot to edgy! I like edgy. And you dare bring up “denim teacher vest”?! Argh to the visual that just conjured up! You’re lucky you’re my BFF. ;p

    • Custo fans, unite! If you’re really interested, I may be putting up a few of my acquisitions on sale on eBay since the excess is a bit embarrassing and I need to make room in my closet.

  4. Oh! Custo is amazing with their prints. Love the sleeve cuff detail too. WHY oh WHY are they SO SMALL? I have the same fit problems with Desigual. No fat, um zaftig, gals in Spain? I think not.
Glad I was able to inspire you to display your finds.

Tell me all about it! I'm listening...
