OOTD :: of the last day of school

On this, the last day of the 2013-2014 school year, I leave my students with my favorite poem. May they remember well the sentiment, if not the words.

by William Ernest Henley

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Those last two lines are central to that book The Other Wes Moore that I teach. Thanks for the preview ; )

  3. That dress is insane!!!! I love it. And what an utterly fabulous poem. I still have a day and a half left because of snow days… No, I’m not moving up to administration. I’ve lost my passion for that. But I am moving…it’s a good thing, great really and I’m beyond excited, but I have to wait until it’s official to shout from the rooftop…ha!

Argh!!! Now I’m thoroughly piqued! When are you gonna do the grand reveal?! And will I be jealous? Probably, huh? ;p

And yes, this dress was a spontaneous add-on to my jcp cart to get free ship. I returned everything except it. LOL.

I think one of my goals this summer is to memorize this poem since I’m making my students do the same with a poem of their own choosing, just to show it can be done.

You made it! That dress is beautiful.

    • mtsedwards says:

I did! And with minimal sturm und drang even because these kids were marvelous! I will miss them dreadfully.

What is the name of the dress? I am having a hard time finding it. Thanks Mrs. Edwards!

    • mtsedwards says:

Argh. Sorry. It’s not a Nanette Lepore. Am changing that in my info now. It’s a Joe Fresh from last season.

  8. Val S says:

Gorgeous dress, gorgeous words, and hurray for the last day of school!!!!!

    • mtsedwards says:

You said it, lady! I’m so ready for lazy days of sleeping in. I just have to survive Girl Scout glamping this weekend then it’s smooth sailing for two months!

  9. Congrats on the last day of school! This is another great color combo!

    • mtsedwards says:

And it’s another surprise color combo too. I’d initially tried it with a TARDIS blue cardi to pick up the blue of the gems in the print but that didn’t make me as happy as this green.

Tell me all about it! I'm listening...
