Thrilled for Thursdays #6

The :: MCC :: Summer Edition is drawing to a close and this may just be the penultimate Thrilled for Thursday feature.

(I’ve yet to decide if my summer ends when my kids go back to school or when I go back to school; I’ll let you know).

To commemorate what I think is a pretty successful run of the summer special, I shall highlight the things that really thrilled me this summer. In no particular order, then:

1.  Trying new restaurants – You know those places that are in the periphery of your mind when you think of places to eat, but when push comes to shove they get shoved aside for your tried and true favorites? Yeah. I would never have thought to have lunch at an ice cream parlor and I wouldn’t do it again any time soon, but boy those sundaes were enormous! And they make a mean chili cheese fry plate. We also tried The Old Spaghetti Factory, Pieology, Menchie’s and Benihana (new for the kids; not me) before it just got too hot to live the comfort of my A/C-ed house.

2.  Going to the beach – I still won’t go into the water. And I still maintain I’m not a beach person. But, as with all things, it really only takes the right combination of chemistry, timing and temperature to make things copacetic. The hubs doesn’t do beach either; he prefers to drive down the coast and point out the water, but my team member, Nav, used to be a water polo stud in high school. And when he invited me and the kiddos to Newport Beach and then proceeded to get in the water with the kids and actually show them how to swim in the ocean while I got to sit under an umbrella and write my story to the tune of crashing Pacific waves? In balmy 80 degree temps? Well, that’s just my idea of a perfect summer day.

3.  Fontana Arts Camp – I’ve already spoken of this miracle camp, but it bears repeating how thrilled I am of it. Not only is it obscenely affordable, it taught Aly loads of things, she made tons of new friends, she got a taste of performing, and it gave me days of uninterrupted 8 hours of writing time. I’m definitely re-enrolling her next summer!

7.31.14

4.  Summer Hits of the 90s Pandora station – My lifesaver. I need music to function and this station plays a variety of music that has just the right amount of familiarity and novelty that I’m not constantly checking to see “who sang this awesome song?” and interrupting my writing mojo but I’m also not stagnating, listening to the same things over and over again. As I told Patti @ Not Dead Yet:

I thought I was an 80s pop queen but realized my formative music years were from when I was in college and beyond and this station just makes me so happy!

5.  My study area/treadmill/Fitbit – Also spoke of the latter two here and here, but I’d like to reiterate how I’ve become a true believer in the value of exercise. Anytime I get stuck in my story, I leap up and do a good ten minutes of brisk walking on the treadmill. Not only does this break my writer’s block, it also garners me those precious steps on my Fitbit. Of course, it helps that the treadmill is conveniently located in our newly renovated study area; I really don’t know what I’m gonna do when school starts; wish I had a treadmill in my classroom! LOL!

Hey! That was 5 Things! Think I can take a bloggy break and reuse this post for this Sunday’s feature? Eheh…

OOTD :: of remixes and backwards attire

Hullo, Wordless Wednesday!

Thank you for another opportunity to style this velvet skirt. I was gonna get rid of it after this challenge but realized it could be remixed in other ways. Plus, it’s the only truly purple thing I own. Oh, and thank you also for another opportunity to wear my sweaters backwards. This cardi is one size too small when worn correctly (silly boobage splitting open the buttons) but just right when worn this way.

Treasure Tuesday :: of prints, pizza, and purse paraphernalia

7.29.14

Welcome to Treasure Tuesday! This is a series conceived by Greenthumb and interpreted by me.

Although her protocol is for participants to take all their pictures to her prompts and publish them in a single post, I’m going to break mine down in bite-sized portions.

Just because.

Yay, summer!

Presenting July’s final installment:

On the wall: I have owned this print since college when I finally got a place of my own – no sisters, no roommates, no significant others – and I felt like such a grown up so I had to buy “real” art. I had no idea who Kandinsky was at the time but I fell in love with the colors and circles. Plus, it was a mere $50 framed from Z Gallerie. Nowadays, I believe this print is ubiquitous to anyone who’s into modern art and my hubs wants me to get rid of it because it’s “college dorm-y”, but I think it’s so reflective of my style persona right now that I think I’ll hang onto it for a bit longer.

Dough: This was actually the last pic I took of the 12 this month because it gave me the hardest time. I don’t bake so “dough” was not something easily accessible at Casa de Edwards. I was gonna go interpretative and just snap a pic of money because dough, but then came the week of being the Kool-Aid house. At least, that’s the term my hubs uses to describe the one house in the neighborhood that all the kids come to to play. And that’s when Little Caesar’s pizza become my hero. Five bucks a pie? Yes, please.

In your bag: In the summer, I strip it down to the essentials. And the older I get, the more spare I can be. I’m all good with my trusty water bottle, the Coach wallet that I bought at an outlet mall over fifteen years ago, my EOS Strawberry Sorbet lip balm (replaced by Urban Decay lippies during the school year), and my journal (which is normally my novel du jour but ever since I started writing again, I can’t read other people’s stuff). The only thing missing is my iPhone but that’s what I’d used to take this pic.

OOTD :: of orchids, silver slippers, and complimentary colors

I love these kinds of challenges. I really do. Because there’s nothing quite as inspiring as nature.

I’ve done dressing like a tree here, here and here. So now, thanks to more madness from Anne @ SpyGirl, we have Orchid Awesomeness.

Now, I don’t think she meant the flower literally, per se. I think she may have had the color in mind (it is one of the Pantone colors of the year, after all). But you know me, Literal Lucy. At least, when it comes to challenges anyway. So off to Pinterest I went and I found these stunning photos of orchids and decided to go forth and create.

I chose three completely different orchids for your viewing pleasure this week so you wouldn’t get thoroughly bored with the same old pink and white variety. Today, I’ve chosen the most vibrant of the bunch in honor of Patti’s Vis Monday linkup, but I hope you stay tuned for the rest of the lovelies (the flowers, not necessarily my outfits) for the rest of the week.
