OOTD :: of birthdays, bras, and being bamboozled

So even though the hubs doesn’t read my blog at all – I think he finds me too wordy – I shall still take this public opportunity to wish him a happy birthday.

Happy birthday, babe! Mwah!

And now that that’s out of the way, on to bras. (Yes, that was a rather abrupt segue but I’m still only functioning at 75% right now and I’m just grateful I managed to get one OOTD post out this week.)

Bras – they can either make or break an outfit. This, I swear. When my daughter starts burgeoning, it’s off to a professional bra measurer we go, and I’m open to suggestions because I think my old standby, Victoria’s Secret, is on my blacklist right now.

Here’s the story: you know how I’ve been doing that Fitbit/10K a day thing all summer, right? And one would think being so fit would help me either maintain or even lose a bit of pudge. But to my horror, when I tried on this dress for Back to School Night, I felt the traitorous snugness across my back that signaled a too-tight piece. My heart nearly broke, my friends, because you all know how much I adore this dress and how I paid such an exorbitant sum to Gwynnie Bee to own it and how I’ve really only worn it the once and was hoping it’d have some staying power in my closet.

I consoled myself with the thought that I could always wear a completer piece with it and could extend its shelf life while I lost weight. And then I railed at the fates for making me all pudgy in the first place and why the heck did I waste all my time treadmilling it if I was just gonna balloon out anyway? (I suppose my eating habits had a bit to do with things, but that’s another post for another day.)

But guess what? When it was time to actually wear the dress, I switched out my VS bra for my strapless one so I could show off the neckline strap-free and voilà! I instantly lost twenty pounds! I wasn’t pudgy – I was wearing the wrong bra!

My VS bras are all super padded because I guess if you shop at VS, you expect to have humungous bazongas and I suppose I should’ve known that all along but I’ve been buying the same bras for as long as I can remember and I’ve never really thought about it until now. Of course, I probably did pudge out a bit – otherwise, I would’ve noticed this bra situation sooner, right? – but at least it’s not as egregious as I thought. My heart isn’t broken; it’s just a little bit cracked.

So heed my words, my friends: bras – wear the proper ones.

You can bet your sweet tuchis that I’m wearing the correct bra for this outfit. And no, it’s definitely not a VS one.

I read a really good explanation of how to measure yourself for a bra. I can’t remember where it was, but your boyfriend Google will tell you. And I love that dress on you with that cardi – cool color combination!

    • mtsedwards says:

I ciuldn’t quite capture it in the detail shot, but I chose the cardi because there’s actually tiny hints of chartreuse in the dress and you know I love shocking color combos.

And already, this not-spending thing is paying off; I never would have remembered then have been forced to style this dress otherwise.

Cute dress! Why do u need a padded bra anyway? Your boobs are big enough (lucky duck)! VS sells lightly lined ones, have u tried those?

    • mtsedwards says:

I don’t need padded bras, per se. I just got suckered into them by the VS shopgirls. I do have the lightly-lined ones, but even those make me at least half a size bigger than I really am.

Grass is always greener, sistah. I wish I had smaller boobs…

    I’m sayin’

So pretty – I see no sign of pudge of any form, you! I love a pretty sundress. xox

So I have half a mind to do a post on candid shots of me where I don’t have a say in my pose or the filter or the angle of the shot (I speak of random coworkers who think it’s a hoot to take pics during staff meetings). I definitely spy pudge in those photos…

  5. I have the same dress and love it! I agree, bras are so important to an outfit. I have had pretty good luck at Nordstrom (on sale usually).

    • mtsedwards says:

So if I have to buy a new bra, would that be violating my 90-day spending fast? LOL.

I bought this dress simply to complete my Target/designer collab collection and this is the first time I’ve worn it. Yeah, I think I’m smitten too.

      • I usually don’t count bras and undies as part of my fashion wardrobe because they are necessary while jewelry, shoes, and clothes aren’t really (at least for me). I have found a few bras at nice thrift stores that (after washing) I didn’t feel weird about wearing.

  6. Hahaha. You are such a brilliant storyteller! I’m glad you found the right bra! My favorite bras are a bit matronly but they are just SO comfortable and the straps don’t slide down my shoulders (as do all other bra straps).

    • mtsedwards says:

My feeling on matronly undergarments: I’m married with two kids – I don’t care that I wear granny panties and wide-strapped bras in nude (the last VS visit I experienced had the shopgirl trying to convince me to buy a floral bra. Why? No one will see it and it’s several dollars more.Silly shopgirl).

  7. I buy bras from Linda the Bra Lady http://www.lindasonline.com
They have detailed measurement instructions and helpful phone staff. They also carry the size I need (36J), which I can’t find except in overpriced boutiques.
A great piece on VS bras (written by my lil’ sis):

Tell me all about it! I'm listening...
