Okay, here’s the deal for all you folks with no school-aged kids in the house: Back to School has been moved up.
Savvy shoppers already know this because the sales and promos are now happening in early August – have been since eons ago – but it may not have registered with you if it’s not relevant to your life.
Lucky you.
As a mom and a teacher, however, I am keenly aware that my academic schedule is not season compliant. School now begins in August and ends in May, my friends. At first, I really liked this since August tends to be a really hot month and I was wickedly happy at the thought of using someone else’s air conditioning and not having to foot the bill.
Sadly, I think I may have to change my mind about advocating this shift in the school year. I really dislike planning outfits that, by necessity and for comfort, are reminiscent of summer. It’s like twisting the knife in my gut, you know? School is supposed to mean layers and chill winds and fashion scarves and turning leaves. Instead, I’m mad scrambling to make my warm-weather clothes look professionally appropriate.
Meh.
This week, Anne @ SpyGirl’s Pick-me-up challenge is Back to School. And as my subject line says, I’ve been there, done that. I’m already a month in and I’m ready for the weather to turn. Then again, I’m only on Day 14 of 50 Dresses so perhaps I could stand to have it be warm for a little bit longer.
Today’s ensemble is very Back to School in my mind because it’s got stripes. Stripes and plaid, my friends, is equivalent to fall and school in my book, never mind that my iteration of stripes is more nautical summer, eh? I think I’m allowed to bend the rules when I’m working within the confines of my self-imposed restrictions.

Oooh! Love this! So crisp, so smart, so cool, so YOU! I just love a crisp cotton striped dress. It’s a specific thing I carry in my heart.
Yes, I get the resentment at specific seasons. You look fabulous, though.
Altuzarra coming, so that’s good.
What do you think of Capaldi? I really want to know. If you’ve already written about it, please send link.
Love, love, love this outfit!
Waldo comment notwithstanding, eh?
I have so few memories of “back to school” that I really can’t comment.
The striped dress is cute!
And since you home school, this isn’t even relevant to your kids either, eh?
The striped dress was a spontaneous purchase when I went to return something at Old Navy. The adults complimented me today but one kid actually came up to me and asked “Where’s Waldo?”
Sigh. Teenagers…
Right. I do buy them new clothes during the sales though.
Waldo? Really?
Yes, although I don’t think he was being deliberately malicious. 🙂
Ah, great look and *fabulous* shoes! Thanks for sharing with Visible Monday, xox.
And the shoes are super comfy too! Thanks for stopping by and being such a gracious linkup hostess with the mostest! 😀
Agreed! I should not be wearing a sleeveless dress with my denim jacket to work today! I SHOULD be wearing a blazer and tights! Those shoes, by the way, are gorgeous!
So when do you expect your weather to turn fall-ish? And yes, I’m totally proud of the fact that I kept the shoes; almost returned them due to buyer’s remorse but now I foresee it making multiple appearances.
