OOTD :: of zebras, pearls, and playing at tomboy

So last week, I was entranced by these Tomboy Style Tips and thought to try my hand at it. After all, one of my go-to style niches is “the badass” and nothing screams more badass than when I channel my inner testosterone-y self.

I’m not saying you have to have outdoor plumbing to be a badass, per se, but I do think there’s something empowering about sharp lines and structure, both of which are more apparent in menswear than in women’s.

Of course, I’m also still trying to meet the 52 Pick-me-up parameters of Animal and finish off my 50 Dresses challenge, so let’s see if you’re with me on today’s interp. Lemme break it down for ya:

  1. Black and white everything (dress, shoes, blazer) to mimic the black and white of a zebra. 52 Pick-me-up Animal week? Check.
  2. It’s a dress. ‘Nuff said.
  3. Oversized tuxedo blazer and brogues for that menswear inspired vibe. Tomboy? Oh, yes!

Damn, I’m good. Tee hee.

Oh, and I’m not sure about that string of pearls. I just threw it on because the blazer really is quite mannish and I needed to mitigate the sheer wideness of those shoulder pads. Dunno if I’ll keep it on or switch it out for my signature monogram necklace.

  1. Are you killin’ it this week or what?! That blazer…I want it. Now. And the entire look is absolute perfection. Well done!

And here I thought the blazer had to go because it’s an XL (was on super sale, loved it but all other sizes were sold out) and I felt I was swimming in it. Funny how this ended up being my fave look of the week. 😀

Love it! You are a total badass!

The brogues and the tux jacket are yummy! I am looking for a similar jacket (maybe a whole suit??). xox

No comments all day and wouldn’t you know – last class of the day and I get smart aleck remarks about bowling shoes. Kids. No sense of style! ;p

  4. I can’t articulate why, but there’s a very Whovian vibe to this look. I like it!

That link! At least half of those looks are exactly how I like to dress. I find it amusing that I have a tomboy style even though I’ve never really been a tomboy. Of course, I’ve never really been a girly girl either.

I wonder if it’s Whovian because of the oversized blazer? Or the brogues? I feel quite Ten-ish in it, I must say, but I didn’t want to go overboard with the Doctor Who copy this week.

And yes, I don’t think of myself as a girly girl either although Aly deemed me so the other day when we were looking at Instagram memes and she wanted to categorize me.

      • Yep, I think it’s the tuxedo jacket – I kept thinking of Ten in Rise of the Cybermen / Age of Steel.

Whenever I take style quizzes, I invariably get “Sporty”, which cracks me up. I associate Sporty with athletic, which I am decidedly not. 😛 The most recent quiz I took had changed its Sporty option to “Natural”, which makes more sense to me.

    Very, very cute on you!

Ah, thanks! But I wonder if it’s appropriate enough for Recruitment Night. Brought a pair of sedate heels just in case.

Tell me all about it! I'm listening...
