OOTD :: of dragon scales and elfin magic

I am not a big LotR fan. Tolkein, sadly, does not do it for me. His writing style is simply too male. I know this is blasphemous talk, especially from a self-confessed fantasy otaku like me. Forgive me if swordplay and epic heroism and massive battles and pretty elves aren’t my cup of tea. Give me comedy and banter and light-hearted romance any day. I skew more Piers Anthony and David Eddings, I guess.

That said, I can definitely appreciate the scope and majesty of epic fantasy’s tropes, specifically the dragon. I prefer my dragons wise and good, à la McCaffrey’s Pern dragons, but really, any will do. And they sure do come cropping up loads in medieval stories.

So I feel perfectly validated wearing today’s ensemble. The vest I scored from thredUp is very reminiscent of dragon scales, which in turn is reminscent of medieval which makes me 52 Pick-me-up compliant. And, of course, TARDIS blue.

(Btw, Selah had sent me this link several days ago, which makes me think I could and should probably make my TARDIS Tuesdays a regular weekly linkup. It’s the one “challenge” I have never failed to do and the various shades of blue, not to mention the myriad cosplay ideas for both Doctor and Companions, should make it a relatively accessible linkup for people, regardless of Whovian fandom or no. What d’you think?)

I’m loving these boots from Target because they’re the perfect shade of cognac and they’re flat, which is perfect for my aging, aching feet. They also have that nice quilted detail in the back that reminds me of medieval armor as well. Egads, am I batting a thousand today or what?

OOTD :: of medieval styling and finally getting it together

T3banner

Lucky you – it’s freebie month on T3. So if our prompts from previous linkups had you stymied, now is your chance to show us a supercool ensemble inspired by anything you’ve read. Hope to see you this Thursday!

For me, I’m still working through Anne’s 52 Pick-me-up challenges, and this week, it’s Medieval. And here’s the thing: old me would’ve immediately jumped onto eBay and found cosplay items. Old me would’ve plunked down considerable ducats for something like these. Old me would’ve sunk my budget on one week’s worth of novelty clothing.

Welcome to new me! New me Googled and Pinterested for medieval inspired outfits, found out what elements were incorporated, then shopped her closet to create this week’s offerings. Today, I’m focusing on velvet and lace.

By mixing textures together, I’m playing with the concept of medieval opulence. I even threw in a pair of shiny pumps for even more excess. Also, there’s something visually medieval in layering short sleeves over long – kinda like mimicking armor. I plan to do more of that silhouette in the coming days, so watch out for it.

It may not be authentic, but it’s interpretative.

And it’s free.

OOTD :: of anime, angst and adrogyny

from Wikipedia

Nana (ナナ?) is a Japanese josei manga series written and illustrated by Ai Yazawa, serialized in Cookie published by Shueisha. The manga derives its title from the name of the two main characters, both of whom are called Nana. Nana Komatsu is a small town girl who goes to Tokyo to follow her boyfriend and college friends, with the hope of having her dream life. Nana Osaki was in a popular punk band in her home town. She goes to Tokyo with the goal of making it big as a singer. The two Nanas meet on the train ride to the city. Later, they run into each other again when they happen to check out the same apartment, and the girls decide to become roommates. The series chronicles their friendship and their lives as each chases her dreams.

Nana was a seminal anime for me out of all the titles I’ve consumed (and trust me, I’ve consumed hundreds!) because it was the one that helped shape my personal style. If I hadn’t already whole-heartedly identified with punker Nana Osaki’s brand of wounded cynic, then the badassery of her wardrobe would’ve cinched the deal.

Because plaid and combat boots and moto jackets are so right up my alley. And I may be tone deaf and may not be able to play an instrument to save my life, but I can certainly rock the look. Watching Nana – both the anime and the live-action drama – was what got me into Vivienne Westwood and rendered me penurious for an entire year as I acquired Viv Westwood swag, not the least of which is the knuckle ring that would eventually become my signature piece.

I did and do still bemoan the fact that my well-endowedness mars the whole rail-thin, adrogynous anime silhouette. And sometimes, in the wee hours of the dawn, I still have a hankering to chop off my hair, strut around with sneering 20-something angst and chain smoke while clutching a bottle of vodka.

A gal can dream, right?

Sadly, I am no longer blinded by the invincibility of youth. And I have to be a responsible grown up with responsible grown up responsibilities.

Style blogging is my escape from all that minutiae. So how fortuitous is it that this week’s Blogging Besties components consisted of “cognac bag, a white sweater, a statement necklace, an A-line skirt, wedges, and plaid”? Guess which elements I’m choosing to pass-on? Because guess who is using this linkup as an excuse to channel her inner anarchic punk rocker?

Vive le vendredi!

OOTD :: of beauty, beast and books

My favorite Disney princess is Belle from Beauty and the Beast.

I am definitely not a Disney person – my American animation tastes lean more toward Pixar – but if compelled to showcase one for Cartoon week, I’d have to admit to having an affinity for Belle.

Because this:

and this:

and this:https://myclosetcatalogue.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/69e8e-bellebooks.jpg

and the fact that she’s got dark hair and an indefatigable go-getter personality and a penchant for blue. Sound like anyone you know?

So yeah. This dress from eShakti – all $5 of it after multiple gift certificates and coupon codes – is all kinds of Belle goodness. Just look at that fit and flare construction! That modest neckline that allows for a crisp white button up underlayer! The pockets! Swoon!

And I don’t even need a princely beast to make my life complete. Just gimme more books!
