OOTD :: of personal bests and favorite quotes

This week is brought to you by: “a fit and flare dress, an open cardigan, colored tights, riding boots, navy stripes, the color teal, a bow belt and cognac accessories”.

For your viewing pleasure, I give you: the cardigan, colored tights (cognac, no less!), a pseudo fit and flare dress, and some stripes (albeit not navy).

The detailed bits: I really do have a fit and flare striped dress and I did plan on wearing it today. Unfortunately, in my haste to make good use of the waning sunlight and take one last outfit pictorial, I grabbed this swing dress instead. Yes, I am slightly ashamed that I own two dresses of the exact same pattern that I could mistake one for the other in my closet.

Then I tried to mitigate the swing cut by throwing on the cardi – you gotta love the mesh sleeves that allow the stripes to show through! – hardly remembering then happily grateful that an open cardi was part of the list. Woots!

Colored tights would’ve been blue, of course, but the sun was sinking and my blue tights were too up high in my closet, so cognac ones from my sock drawer had to suffice. Luckily, I also owned cognac – erm, burgundy? – Chucks, so I figured serendipity was at work here.

At the last minute, I grabbed one of my new necklaces – custom made with my favorite Shakespearean quote of all time by another Etsy seller I was working with (link to her shop below). I ran down the stairs, out to the backyard, and snapped a total of ten outfit shots before the gloom overcame me.

In sum, the creating, putting on, setting up and photographing of this entire outfit took all of ten minutes, a personal best for me. And I have Whitney and Alex to thank for making the first half of that process all the easier and simpler with their faboo linkup.

Vive le vendredi!

OOTD :: of Thoughtful Thursday and the secret to excellence

Some people may have greatness thrust upon them. Very few have excellence thrust upon them. They achieve it. They do not achieve it unwittingly, by ‘doing what comes naturally’; and they don’t stumble into it in the course of amusing themselves. All excellence involves discipline and tenacity of purpose.

No OOTD today

So let’s play the good news/bad news game, shall we?

The good news: I’m not going to work today.
The bad news: I’m not going to work today because I have to babysit the demo guys as they gut my house since my toilet leaked last Sunday and they have to assess the water damage to the ceiling and walls and floors.

The good news: I don’t have to face my students.
The bad news: I had planned an SUSD (Shut Up, Sit Down aka independent research) day anyway so now I’ve wasted it on a sub.

The good news: I get to lounge around the house all day.
The bad news (for my regulars anyway): There will be no Wednesday OOTD because sweats and a tee are thoroughly unglamourous and unworthy of a full-bore pictorial session.

The good news: I’ll have plenty of uninterrupted time to create future outfits and perhaps even complete some photo shoots.
The bad news: I don’t think I’ll feel comfortable with demo guys swarming the place, so no creating or photo shooting will be had.

The good news: I’ll have plenty of uninterrupted time to actually read.
The bad news: None of the books on my library queue have come in so I have nothing to read.

The good news: I’ll have plenty of uninterrupted time to write.
The bad news: I’m currently in a slump and can’t seem to break through the writer’s block.

So how much you all wanna bet that this is gonna end up being a complete waste of a day, riddled with halfhearted attempts at productivity but ultimately doomed to amount to nothing?

Thank you for allowing me to break protocol and whinge on a Wordless Wednesday. We return you to your normally scheduled broadcast tomorrow…

TARDIS Tuesday :: of Tom Baker’s scarf and decadent velvet

I must have subconsciously wanted to do TARDIS Tuesdays for quite some time.

How else to explain the purchase of this fantabulously Tom Baker-esque scarf two years ago during Forever 21’s super-duper winter clearance? I still remember waffling between this beauty and a plaid number, this one winning out simply because it was less expensive than the other. Oh, sure, I was watching Doctor Who back then too, but I wasn’t sartorially inspired by the show and I certainly didn’t have cosplay on my radar.

Not to say I have cosplay on my radar now. My days of con attendance are long gone (although Aly did mention wanting to go to one someday, but I fear her fandoms are diametrically opposed to mine and she’d be better served going to cons with friends). And I probably can’t even call myself a “true Whovian” since I have never watched any of the episodes before the reboot with 9.

I am, however, the proud owner/operator of the TT linkup, and nu-Whovian status notwithstanding, I think this scarf fits the bill with frightening accuracy for something so unplanned, doesn’t it? And if that’s not enough to convince you of my linkup compliance, how about them deep blue velvet flared trousers? It’s very apropos to the era when Mr. Baker took his turn at being the Doctor.

All in all, I’m thoroughly satisfied with this look and can’t wait to see what the rest of you have to offer this week. Anything blue? Anything Doctor Who reminiscent? Pray tell…
