Okay, so my favorite thing about this outfit is the one thing that you can’t see.

I kinda went on a shopping spree for knee high socks the other week, and I found these at Target. They were over-the-knee socks and I felt too short to be able to pull them off, but they were soooo soft that I couldn’t resist so into the basket they went.

When I got home, and pulled them on, I was pleasantly surprised to find that, not only were they uber soft, they were actually lace patterned, very similar to the kimono above. This meant they would add a textural element to any outfit along with providing me with warmth.

And the over-the-knee worry? Yeah, not so much a worry after all. The little bit o’ ruffle at the top is reminiscent of naughty lingerie, but since the socks are black, I think I can get away with it. I highly recommend grabbing a pair while they’re still available.

But what about the rest of the outfit?

Well, c’mon! Was there ever any doubt that one day I’d be pattern mixing plaid and polka dots? The surprise here was the choice of kimono. Although plain black unlike my other floral patterned ones, it’s got that aforementioned lace fabric which adds yet another visual layer. It could have gone so very wrong – three patterns at once? – but somehow, it all pulled together. I can’t quite articulate it, but the whole thing was very pleasing to my eye and I just rolled with it.

I hope it pleases your eye too.

So, I chose blue this week. And you? British, blue or Doctor Who? Pick your poison and do tell…

Allow me to appropriate today for my righteous purposes.

Initially, I was to feature my 52 Pick-me-up outfit today as per usual, but something happened at school on Friday that necessitated a quick wardrobe change. It’s a long, drama-full story that probably won’t interest my stylista readers, but suffice to say I had to wear black today in support of my students.

Sadly, black is the least photogenic color when all you’ve got is your backyard and an iPhone. Oh, and when you’ve gotta take emergency pics in the heat of the day and the sun isn’t cooperating, ruining your shots with shadows.

I took a detail pic of the sweater so you all can see the awesomesauceness of the ribbon fabric, but you really can’t see its drape. Or the fact that it’s semi-sheer quality does allow the red tank to show through. Or the fact that my pants are my favorite snakeskin skinnies.

So, yeah. Today, we use our imagination.

I hope my students appreciate my sartorial sacrifice.

OOTD :: of florals, stripes, and making my escape

This week is brought to you by: “a striped shirt, a plaid blanket scarf, a scarf as a vest/poncho, pattern mixing, skinny jeans, a cognac belt or moccasins”.

For your viewing pleasure, I give you: the striped shirt, pattern mixing and skinny jeans.

The extra bits: I’m ditching school again today. Shhhhh! Don’t tell anyone!

I have good reasons, though. First, it’s my kids’ Spring Break this week and I wanted to be a good mommy and spend at least one day of their holidays with them. Today is a good day to do so since it’s opening weekend for Home and we all do love a good day at the movies.

Second, it’s Powder Puff day at school and I loathe Powder Puff. Had I gone to school, I would have had to pretend not only to like it but to root for my juniors when I’d rather root for the seniors. To eliminate the stress and angst, a ditch day was definitely in order.

Before I’d committed to ditching, however, I did plan to participate in the day’s spirit theme (class colors) concurrently with Whitney and Alex’s Blogging Besties linkup. The junior class color is red, thus the plethora of scarlet items in today’s outfit. I knew I wanted to do the striped shirt because it just screams “spring”, but this top is a bit snug for my comfort, so a completer piece was necessary. It had promised to be too warm for cardi or blazer, so button-up ftw. That the button-up is floral just makes the pattern mixer maven in me happy happy. And don’t you just love the unexpected pop of turquoise on the sleeves?

Vive le vendredi!
