OOTD :: of sassy daughters and being contrary

This week is brought to you by: “lace shirt, cardigan, skinny jeans, ballet flats, lace, blush, and maroon”.

For your viewing pleasure, I give you: the cardigan, skinny jeans, blush and maroon.

The extra bits: “I thought I told you not to wear that.” Honest to Pete, that is exactly what my nine-year-old daughter told me – complete with ‘tude and recrimination – when she saw me prepping my photos. Sometimes, you just gotta laugh.

No insult meant to Alex, but when I told Aly that this week, it was all about blush and maroon, she gave me a five-minute scold on why the two colors “do not go”. She lectured me on the color wheel, told me that red and pink should never be paired together and that maroon and blush are pretty much the same as the aforementioned colors. Then she punctuated the entire thing with a wrinkled nose and an “It’s ugly, Mom! Don’t wear that. I don’t want to see you wearing that. Ever.”

And of course, like any card-carrying Gemini, I went the total opposite and wore the outfit anyway.

Because I happen to think blush and maroon go. And I also happen to think that the only way I can get away with blush so close to my cool-winter-coloring face is to match it up with a jewel tone like maroon. (Or Marsala. Or oxblood. Or whatever they’re calling it these days.) And I just really happen to like how this whole outfit came together.

The owl with glasses is just icing on the cake.

Vive le vendredi!

EDIT: Oh, no! After reading the first three comments for this post, I reread my copy and realized I made Aly out to sound like this total brat. The whole episode was actually quite cute and humorous and I was proud of her for even having an opinion and sticking to it, so my apologies to Aly for misrepresenting her and my apologies to my readers for misleading you.

You and Aly are adorable. And look at you wearing this year’s color – Marsala, which I happen to adore. I love your cardigan and polka dot blouse!

    XOXO ❤ Ada.

And now that I have a clearer concept of “Marsala”, I can safely say that I love this year’s color. 🙂

  2. Lol! So much like my daughter on our shopping excursion last weekend. I adore the outfit…with age comes wisdom.

  3. This is adorable! I love that your daughter has an opinion about your clothes. So cute! And for the record, I love this combination!

Maybe you have to know Aly? I thought it was funny! I have to disagree with Aly, though. I really like the outfit : )

  5. Kezzie says:

Ha, Aily makes me laugh!!! I love the cute prepay feel to this!x

    • mtsedwards says:

Doesn’t she just? She’s a hoot, but her brother is even funnier. It’s all fun and games in my house, I tell ya! ;p And yes, “preppy” is my other go-to style niche.

  6. Dawn Lucy says:

Kids are funny and they certainly have their own opinions about things! But I agree with you on this one, blush and maroon absolutely go together! Cute look!
Thanks for sharing with Fun Fashion Friday!

And I never would’ve thought to wear the pieces together had it not been for the linkup. Inspiration is a funny thing, isn’t it? And always a pleasure to linkup with you, Dawn. Just hope you never tire of my Chucks outfits on Fridays.

Ahhh….your daughter has so much to learn. Maybe it’s time she goes to a color class? It’s exactly the fact that the two colors are actually different values of the same color that they DO go together!!! But it’s good she becomes sassy, better than being a doormat!! jodie

  8. Patti says:

A “card-carrying Gemini” – that’s me too. Love this look, esp the sassy owl. xo

And that’s why we get along so well, eh? Too bad geography gets in the way of a proper friendship. I’d love to tag along on your thrifting expeditions or hear you sing.

  9. Aly is just plain wrong. Blush and maroon are lovely together, creating a monochromatic look without being boring (I also happen to like pink and red together). Personally, I loved the color scheme on Alex and on you.

My daughter has been very sassy lately (even the pediatrician said that the “sassy sixes” are as bad as the “terrible twos”). I tell her there’s a difference between being sassy (independent / standing up for herself) and sassing her parents (rudeness). 🙂

    • mtsedwards says:

Indeed! I fight about that with the hubs all. the. time.

I tell him that ultimately, we’ll both be thankful that we’re not raising a doormat, but there is a fine line between being assertive and being a bully and a brat.

Tell me all about it! I'm listening...
