OOTD :: of work-appropriate shorts and guessing games

So this week marks my penultimate week of work and regular OOTDs before I take a pseudo hiatus during the summer.

I figured I might as well go out with a bang, however, so I’m imposing several challenges on myself.

The main one is my tried and true linkup, 52 Pick-me-up, and Anne has given me a doozy: United Nations. At first, I was truly stymied and even asked for some guidance from the guru – and Anne did send me several helpful links and some suggestions – but ultimately, my outfit creations were predicated by my other personal challenge: making shorts work appropriate.

Yes, Whitney, this one’s for you!

I am going to feature outfits incorporating shorts three days this week (I really only bought three pairs because those are all the colors Old Navy had in the style I liked), and you all have to chime in and tell me if I hit the mark or not, keeping in mind that I work at a progressive school on the second floor where admin rarely sees me.

So, on with the show…

Strategy #1: Juxtapose shorts with professional elements.
In my case today, I utilized a blazer, a silky top, and a pair of wedge heels. Yes, the blazer is more relaxed with its drape and boyfriend cut. Yes, the top is not tucked in. Yes, the heels are strappy and show off a bit too much toe to be conservative. But somehow, I think they work all together to elevate a pair of shorts from summertime casual to summertime profesh, doncha think?

As for the United Nations connection? I’ve decided to give you all a bit of a quiz and have you guess what country inspired each day’s look. I swear I had one in mind for each one, but I’d love to hear your conjectures.

So what do you think today’s country is? Do tell…

:: Just the facts, ma’am ::
Top – Modcloth
Blazer – H&M
Shorts – Old Navy
Wedges – eBay

  1. […] the way, yesterday’s look was inspired by Italy because when I think “Italy”, I think lemons (don’t ask; I […]

You definitely hit the mark today! The jacket and the length of the shorts make it perfect! Funny, because I wore a similar outfit today. jodie
    ps…And I guess Bosnia

    • mtsedwards says:

I don’t even know what color flag Bosnia’s got, but I’ll take your word for it. It’s not, though. ;p

And yes, great minds today, eh? Were we similar in color or items or both?

I love the shorts! You look really, really amazing! Such nice colours mi dear!x

A gret alternative to skirts, totally professional and more comfortable than dresses. What’s not to like?
The blouse gives a luxury vibe.

  5. YES! You totally nailed a professional shorts look! I think for me it’s the blazer and the tie on the front of the blouse that make it work. We must be on the same page because I think I’m going to venture into short territory at work on Friday. It’s kind of cheating because it’s field day and we are allowed to wear shorts. Nonetheless, I’ve never actually worn shorts during past field days for fear of students seeing my legs (I’m reminding myself that I shouldn’t care about this). Anyway, I’m pulling out all of the stops with a shorts romper on Friday.

P.S. I can’t figure out the country. Every time I think of one, I change my mind. Are you going to tell us tomorrow?

    • mtsedwards says:

Oh, you’ve still got students? And no, field day isn’t cheating but it does allow you a bit of leeway so you can dip your toe in the proverbial water, so to speak. Can’t wait to see what you come up with! And yes, I’ll reveal the country tomorrow. 🙂

The Romanovs? Whichever, it’s a great combo and you look lovely. Thanks for sharing with Visible Monday, xo.

I’m just happy that the last Vis Monday of the season got one of my better outfits of the year. See you in the fall!

I have no idea. Hahahaha. Love the mystery, or the “teaching moment” as one says. (Boy, did I have one of those majorly bite me in the butt in April. It was a teaching moment FAIL). All I can think is England, it kind of reminds of a British public school uniform (if it was a school for slightly kinky boys).
You nailed “work appropriate” in my book. Keep in mind that I dress, um, VIBRANTLY and elicit NO comments from the coworkers. In fact I went out “in public” (walked on 3rd Street near the Beverly Center) on Friday in that crazy legs TARDIS look that I linked and felt very VISIBLE. I sensed covert wielding of smartCameras.

    • mtsedwards says:

Ooooh, I hadn’t even thought of British schoolboy. /files away for future reference

You and I are cut from the same cloth when it comes to outrageous acts of fashion, I think. I just skewing a tad more conservative only because teenagers sometimes can’t appreciate true eclectic style and end up getting distracted. ;p

  8. This is lovely! I’m guessing Vatican City, because the color combo reminds me of the flag:

    • mtsedwards says:

You’re the second person to guess Vatican City and you’re close. In fact, so close, I’ll call it a winner, winner chicken dinner! ;p

I LOVE this! You look amazing, and I am trying to figure out what to wear. Possibly inappropriate shorts…

Tell me all about it! I'm listening...
