OOTD :: of the return of the Doctor and a bit of ambivalence

So perhaps it’s a good thing that Jenna Coleman, aka Clara Oswald, is bowing out as the Doctor’s Companion this season. Much as her character has endeared herself to me these past few seasons, and much as I respect Ms. Coleman’s acting chops, I just can’t get the chemistry between her and Capaldi. So much so that I am really quite hard-pressed to even remember any of the episodes from last season; I was that unimpressed.

Well, “unimpressed” is an inaccurate term. I’m more “lukewarm” about the whole thing. I feel so disconnected from the dynamic between Capaldi and Coleman. It’s like reading a book for school versus reading a book for pleasure – I can still appreciate the content but I have no visceral, emotional investment.

The season 9 opener last Saturday was no exception. Even though I’m a Nu-Whovian and all the references to apparently iconic elements like Davros and Skaro escaped me, I was still ready to give the Capaldi/Coleman duo another go. But no dice. Nada. Zilch. Even when he unexpectedly hugged her. No tears. No feels. Couple that with a fan-heavy, geektastic story arc, and The Magician’s Apprentice left me cold. (And what’s that all about anyway? Who was supposed to be the apprentice? And who the magician? I don’t care if it’s a two-parter; I waited 9 months for this and I did not want my wait to end in bewilderment!)

So, au revoir, Jenna Coleman. Here’s hoping your replacement makes more sparks fly with Capaldi than your Clara Oswald did.

Okay, three paragraphs of fangirl (can I even call myself a Whovian fangirl after my three-paragraph admission of ignorance?) rant aside, let’s talk clothes. As of this writing, I’m not even sure if I’ll be sporting this ensemble for real. Aly is still running a temperature; I just got yelled at by my mother for even considering going in to work instead of taking her to the doctor (see what I did there?) and I may just end up calling in sick myself for another day so I can be mom instead of teacher.

How the hell do single mothers do this?!

If I do go to work, I shall be wearing this all-blue affair in honor of my linkup. I may be feeling “meh” about the Doctor and “grrr” about my daughter’s persistent illness, but at least I can fake professionalism in a relatively cute outfit.

  1. I was pleasantly surprised by Saturday’s premiere. I was ambivalent going in as I didn’t enjoy last season (except Time Heist – I liked that one), but I thought the premiere was far superior to last season. I agree that Clara and 12 don’t have great chemistry (and I knew you didn’t mean romantic) but I really think it’s the writing rather than the actors. The writers have made Capaldi’s Doctor brusque and they’re very inconsistent on Clara’s characterization. I mean, they took the girl who has seen all the Doctors and made her say things like “ugh, he’s old” and “this isn’t you” when she’s seen him old (multiple times) and she knows all his personalities.

Oh my goodness…I’m so relieved to hear this. I really did not dig last season. I stopped watching, actually, and the first episode of this season was killing me. You’re right. The two of them are not a great pair. The thing is, I always loved Jenna, so I wasn’t seeing it for what it was.

I love your TARDIS blue!!! I’m sorry you felt a bit ambivalent about it. Have to say, I love the lack of chemistry. I was getting sick of the Doctor Companion chemistry in terms of romantic interest so it was a refreshing change. X

Oh, agree! It’s why I was never a big Rose fan. See my reply to Patti below and I think my stance on the matter will be a lot clearer. And thanks for the compliment on the outfit. I got several compliments from students today so perhaps I need to get over my ambivalence, eh?

Well, I must respectfully share another opinion. Besides her being adorable (my husband crushes for Clara like mad) I like their relationship. I don’t find anything romantic in it but when he got on his knees to plead for her life, I had a feelz. That said – Missy and the Doctor certainly have chemistry! And I did like his guitar. : >

Cutest outfit today – paying your respects to the TARDIS if not the recent episode. xox

Ah, I love me a bit of controversy! Respectfully share away! That said, I do agree Clara is adorable and I think I may have mislead when I spoke of “chemistry” (as evinced by Kezzie’s comment above). To me, “chemistry” is not romantic – it’s simply the sizzle and sass that two individuals share when in each other’s presence. The best example I can think of is the chemistry between 10 and Donna. There were no romantic implications there, but they always brought to mind the fun banter of Bogart and Bacall and I really appreciated that. I wish the same for 12 and I think he’s got that in spades with Missy.

Tell me all about it! I'm listening...
