Common Threads Challenge :: Euro Chic/Posh Eclectic

Hullo, and welcome to the Common Threads Challenge and my first, official outfits post!

If you haven’t already done so, hop on over to join our private Facebook group, post your outfits on IG and use the hashtag #commonthreadschallenge, or just link up using the blue froggy.

Many ways to participate and have fun! But let’s get on with the show…

Bianca Jagger.  Catherine Deneuve.  Princess Caroline of Monaco. These are the women for whom the word “chic” was invented…There’s a sense of selectiveness and couture to everything they wear – expensive or not – and to how they wear it… “The thing that is different about European chic is that it is effortless and sophisticated,” says designer Diane Von Furstenberg.  “The important part is the eclectic part – not what you wear, what you punctuate things with.”

“There’s a lot more eclecticism and experimentation in Britain than [there is in] French or Italian fashion,” says former Chloé designer Pheobe Philo. “Although we’re huge snobs, people are into wearing clothes that don’t conform.” Indeed, when it comes to this category [Posh Eclectic], ordinary conventions of dressing simply do not apply. Instead, there’s a certain madcap glamour, made up of equal parts country-estate frump and the black- sheep aristocrat’s disregard for what’s acceptable.

Last week’s theme was Euro Chic/Posh Eclectic which I felt was apropos as I got ready for my new principal’s observation of me on Monday. I was dressed to the nines, sporting my professional black trousers, but showing off a bit of my quirky side by pairing it with a red, velvet blazer and a pleat-front, tie-neck blouse. Sadly, I was still suffering from a bad case of the “I’m sick but no one can tell because I’m doped up on Nyquil”, so my observation did not go as swimmingly as I’d intended.

For the Tuesday black blazer look, I opted to be monochromatic and chose my “pop” to be less about color but more about textures, as evinced by the pearl collar of my black tee and the lace overlay of my pencil skirt. Still trying for Euro chic-ness.

Wednesday found me and my classic white button-up channeling my inner librarian as I styled it with my favorite grey cardi (a workhorse in my wardrobe), wool plaid wrap skirt, and sensible shoes. Let’s not forget the pearls either – my bid at being a “mum”.

Thursday’s Breton tee ensemble takes the literal approach to Euro chic/posh eclectic as I pair it with a midi circle skirt that proudly and brazenly displays the UK in all its red phone booth/lorry glory.

Friday and the skinny jeans is perhaps my most posh eclectic ensemble. My daughter gifted me with a quizzical look – like she was questioning my sanity – and even I paused a bit in the mirror before I did my “happy dance” and deemed the outfit okay for public consumption. I guess I really just wanted a reason to wear the velvet, Harry Potter-esque cape/coat that has been moldering in the depths of my closet.

So how do you think my pieces fared with this week’s theme and the challenge overall? Lemme know by commenting below…

Common Threads Challenge :: The Pieces

Hullo, all!

In the pursuit of efficiency and ease, I’ve decided to incorporate my five pieces into each one of my workday outfits. Makes sense, right? Five pieces, five workdays? The items I’ve chosen and their corresponding days are as follows (hover over each pic for more info):

Seeing all of them together like this, I realize I’ve unconsciously chosen very monochromatic basics that will work wonderfully as a foundation for other, more showy things. Gods, I’m good!

By the way, all my pieces are from Old Navy, with the exception of the black trousers which is a Who What Wear item from Target.

Also, I want to give a shout-out to The Lucky Guide to Mastering Any Style, my second style bible, for providing me with the inspiration for a lot of my ensembles. I’ve been out of the au courant loop for so long that I really appreciated the kickstart this book gave me.

I can’t wait to show off my outfit experimentations and permutations, and I urge you to share your creations using the link below.

Common Threads Challenge

I have teamed up with five other bloggers to create a brand-new wardrobe remix concept called the Common Threads Challenge. During the month of October, we will be taking on this new challenge together and we would LOVE for you to join us!

  • Alex—The Cheerful Closet
  • Maricel—My Closet Catalogue
  • Whitney—Whitney a la mode
  • Carrie—A Stylish Fit
  • Ada—Elegance and Mommyhood
  • Caroline—Tasteful Style

  • Choose five specific pieces from your closet –for example, one pair of shoes, one blazer, one skirt, one dress, and one blouse. Try not to choose multiple items in the same category (e.g. two pairs of shoes, two shirts, etc.)
  • For the duration of the challenge, at least one of those pieces must be used in every single outfit. The rest of your closet is fair game!
  • Instead of limiting your options to a small segment of your closet like you would for a normal remix, the goal is to really stretch your creativity in how those five pieces. Document your daily outfits to keep track of the different ways you wear each of your pieces!

How to Participate:

This challenge is open to EVERYONE, not just bloggers! Our vision is to create a community where we can support each other in our goal to make the most out of the closet we already have! Here are some ways you can participate:

  • For the bloggers out there, we will have a weekly linkup that goes live on each of our blogs every Wednesday during the challenge. You can post a weekly recap on your blogs each week, and link up those recaps!
  • We have opened a private Facebook group for challenge participants to provide support and encouragement to each other! We want to see your daily outfits, ideas for remixing your pieces, or any questions or trouble you’re having! Join the group here.
  • Share your looks with us on Instagram using the hashtag #commonthreadschallenge!

The challenge will formally begin on Sunday, October 1. Our first linkup will be held on Wednesday, October 4 where we will be sharing the pieces we chose for the challenge. We will continue with weekly outfit recaps each Wednesday and wrap up with our final linkup on Wednesday, November 1!

Due to circumstances beyond my control, there will be no Blogging Besties post from My Closet Catalogue this week.

I apologize to all the readers of the other three ladies’ blogs. They had nothing to do with this and were informed of my oversight at the last minute so they couldn’t even create content of their own.

I hope this didn’t inconvenience anyone and I promise to do better next time. I’m currently wearing an oversized grey top, black velvet boyfriend blazer, black jeans and knee-high boots. So for Alex’s challenge next week, she can choose from any of the above.
