Breaking down the budget :: October 2014

Here’s my haul for the month of October. Since I’ve not really decided on a budget yet ($150? $200? $250?), I’m thinking $251.65 is pretty good, especially considering my Caesar-like excesses of the past.

That said, I suppose I could’ve been even more under budget had I not made that last-minute eBay purchase of that Kirna Zabete dress or that Libertine blazer. Those two items really put me over the top. My only defense is that I went into panic mode when both my Libertine dress and my Kirna Zabete ended up being to snug on me and, rather than simply vowing to cut out sweets for a bit and lose the weight, I decided to replace them with new pieces.

What some of you may not know is that I obsessed over Target/designer collab pieces this past summer. I Wiki-ed them all, and then, going all the way back to 2006, I Mad Hunted so I at least owned one item per collection. Some were pretty easy to acquire and cost me mere pennies (thank you, thredUp!) but others were more challenging and/or more pricey. It didn’t help that the earlier collabs were junior sizes and I’m easily a size 13, not a popular choice out there in eBay land.

Anyhow, my Kirna size medium is up for grabs on eBay if anyone’s interested.

As for the rest of my haul? I did mention I went buck wild with the Payless Comfort Plus sale, thus the shoes. And snuggly cardis ftw! Click on each item for more side stories, if you’re so inclined.

(And yes, Whitney, doing this budget update really kept me from overspending too much. Thanks for the suggestion!)

Hullo, Wordless Wednesday!

And so the remixing continues. This dress was in the cull bag but then I remembered this pair of shoes I purchased from Lisa @ Respect the Shoes and I knew it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

OOTD :: of back to school and been there, done that

Okay, here’s the deal for all you folks with no school-aged kids in the house: Back to School has been moved up.

Savvy shoppers already know this because the sales and promos are now happening in early August – have been since eons ago – but it may not have registered with you if it’s not relevant to your life.

Lucky you.

As a mom and a teacher, however, I am keenly aware that my academic schedule is not season compliant. School now begins in August and ends in May, my friends. At first, I really liked this since August tends to be a really hot month and I was wickedly happy at the thought of using someone else’s air conditioning and not having to foot the bill.

Sadly, I think I may have to change my mind about advocating this shift in the school year. I really dislike planning outfits that, by necessity and for comfort, are reminiscent of summer. It’s like twisting the knife in my gut, you know? School is supposed to mean layers and chill winds and fashion scarves and turning leaves. Instead, I’m mad scrambling to make my warm-weather clothes look professionally appropriate.

Meh.

This week, Anne @ SpyGirl’s Pick-me-up challenge is Back to School. And as my subject line says, I’ve been there, done that. I’m already a month in and I’m ready for the weather to turn. Then again, I’m only on Day 14 of 50 Dresses so perhaps I could stand to have it be warm for a little bit longer.

Today’s ensemble is very Back to School in my mind because it’s got stripes. Stripes and plaid, my friends, is equivalent to fall and school in my book, never mind that my iteration of stripes is more nautical summer, eh? I think I’m allowed to bend the rules when I’m working within the confines of my self-imposed restrictions.

OOTD :: of going against protocol and fridge logic

There is no TARDIS Tuesday this week.

These are not the ‘droids you are looking for.

Yeah, yeah, I know my Jedi mind tricks won’t work on you but I had to give it a try. Honestly, because I think I’m still in summer mode, I hadn’t thought to create a Woodstock outfit around the TARDIS.

But you know what? I’m done being Literal Lucy.

How about we say that the total hippie vibe inherent in this outfit allows me to seamlessly fit in with the natives had the Doctor come for me, dubbed me his new companion (I WISH!) and whisked me away to 1969 in the TARDIS for a madcap adventure.

Yep. That’s how I’m spinning this one.

So go ahead and stare at the pretty pics, join me in my debate of tucked versus untucked, and don’t worry overmuch if, later in the day, you finally get stunned by my fridge logic for this OOTD.
