OOTD :: of a new twist on a new fave

Last season, I was all into skinny jeans.

My Mad Hunting quest back then (before I even knew to call it Mad Hunting) was to own a pair of skinnies in every single color of the rainbow. Boy, that was a chore! Do you know how difficult it was to find the perfect pink pair? Sheesh!

Well, I’d done it and my closet has stacks of jeans coordinated by hue and pattern to prove my success. Of course, I’ve since stopped running ye ol’ treadmill regularly and I’ve snuck a can of soda or three indiscriminately which means those skinny jeans? Yeah, not so skinny on me anymore.

So until I get back down to fighting weight again – and it will happen; I just need a good swift kick – I’ve turned to wearing skater skirts. Why skater skirts? They’re forgiving to my pooch and flattering to my vertically challenged height. They’re alternately flippy and girly or edgy and kitschy depending on what I pair them with, and they’re easily adaptable to the schizophrenic temps we’ve got in SoCal (tights or leggings and boots if cool; bare legged and pumps if not).

Come to think of it then, when put that way, I may just adopt skater skirts as My Thing and donate all my skinnies. 😜

While I ponder that possibility, let me just link up with Caitlin @ Greater Than Rubies today. Her weekly RRR theme is A New Twist on an Old Favorite, and even though skater skirts are a new fave, I’ve done so many iterations of it (here, here and here, for example) that I can safely say it’s been a true remix of my wardrobe. Pairing it up today with a cropped jacket and wearing said jacket as a top (I mean, wouldn’t you? Look at that fab portrait collar!) is just one of the many ways you can style the very versatile skater skirt.

Yeah, I think I’m hooked.

OOTD :: of overcoming the green curse

I don’t do green. I have reconciled myself to this.

We all remember my struggles every time St. Paddy’s Day rolls around because of this very sad fact. So although I admire it on others and have numerous outfit Pins to prove it, I have never really been successful in styling this troublesome color.

But perhaps this shirt will break the cycle? A Joe Fresh number that sang to me from the depths of the sale rack, I knew I had to have it simply for the fun repeating pattern alone. Are they hearts? Butterfly wings? Half an apple? Who cares? It’s super fun! And it’s green!

Of course, once the rush of spontaneous purchasing died down and I brought my prize home, I was once again at a loss. It shouldn’t have been so hard, right? At its very core, it’s a simple button down shirt. And flowy silk to boot. Styling this should be right in my wheelhouse. But I stared and pondered, hemmed and hawed, and at the end, regretfully decided to turn around and return the darned thing for want of a proper outfit.

Once again, though, Anne and her Pick-me-up challenge came to the rescue because Pattern Overload made me rethink my approach. On a whim, I threw on my newly-acquired Thakoon skirt, and voilà! Pattern mixing magic! Who woulda thunk it? I think I may just have this green curse beat after all.

Hullo Wordless Wednesday!

You know you’re totally loving the girly juxtaposition of floral and lace but also admiring the sly sassyness of such blatant pattern mixing.

OOTD :: of turning 42, favorite colors and pattern overload

5.27.72

This week is brought to you by Anne @ SpyGirl’s Pattern Overload theme. (See how I commemorated Memorial Day and fulfilled the theme simultaneously here.)

Today I give you a repeating floral diamante, a graphic tee and multicolored spats. If that’s not pattern overload, I don’t know what is.

Bonus #1 is that today’s outfit incorporates two of my current fave colors: TARDIS blue and chartreuse.

Bonus #2 is that I’m incorporating an older fandom to show my geek diversity (it’s not always all about Doctor Who around here, ya know!)

Bonus #3 is that I’m uber comfy but also satisfyingly quirky at the same time. Goes to show that with age comes great wisdom: I now feel I can confidently maintain a singular style without surrendering to pain and discomfort.

I’m celebrating my 42nd birthday today, so even though I’m at work and grading senior presentations, I’m giving myself a break and treating today like a Wordless Wednesday. If you want your regular wordy fix, why not head on over to Alex @ Undergraduate Style? I’m guest posting over there.
